Insulation for Electrical Wiring

All electrical wiring used in commercial, industrial and residential applications must be insulated. This involves wrapping the copper or aluminum conductor, usually with PVC (polyvinyl chloride). There are several configurations for electrical wiring, which can be found here.

Conductor with Insulation

There are several reasons that insulation around the conductor is necessary. The most obvious reason is that an energized conductor would be dangerous to the people installing/servicing the electrical devices. Not to mention, and energized conductor would also be very dangerous to the building it is installed in as it could cause a fire.

The other reason that insulation is required is that conductors produce heat when installed in a conduit with one another. As conductors get closer to and touch one another, it increases the chances of the circuit breaker tripping. The insulation in this case is used to maintain the electrical current from the source.
